The conference is being run by the European Timber Federation (ETTF) and the European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry (EOS), together with hosting association Sahateollisuus (Finnish Sawmills Association).
"The ongoing pandemic, the high level of uncertainty, but also the willingness to have the feel of a normal conference, pushed us to come up with this innovative format for the ISC 2021” said Kai Merivuori, managing director of Sahateollisuus, in agreement with EOS and ETTF.
While the co-organisers look forward to meeting in person many stakeholders, the hybrid format will allow people who cannot travel to attend the conference the ability to view in a digital format.
The hybrid ISC conference will be held on 14 October in one day and will be preceded by the traditional welcome cocktail on October 13. The gala dinner will take place on October 14.
The ISC 2021 will be moderated by long-serving moderator and timber market expert Keith Fryer.
Like every year, information about the registration for the hybrid conference 2021 will be available on the website of the conference. Registrations have already opened.

EOS Members are invited to the EOS Summer General Assembly, which will take place on June 24 at 9am CET.
With the current Covid-19 restrictions, the legal department of our Auditor informed us that the situation remains the same as for the period after 30.06.2020. In view of the fact that it remains difficult to hold physical meetings and get together, it has been permitted for NPO’s ( non-profit organizations) to equate meeting by video conference ( Zoom, skype, Teams, etc,…), with logging in via the link on the hour included on the agenda. No statutory authorization is required any more.
These meetings are considered as physical meetings according to the normal rules of the association code, provided that the members have been duly convened, that the participants are recognizable in order to be able to vote and confer. Voting will take place as at an ordinary general meeting where people would meet physically. This means the unanimity that was previously required until 30.06.2020 has been relaxed for non-profit organizations.

The contribution of forests in climate change mitigation is presently very much at focus. As part of this debate, it is often stated that a carbon debt occurs when harvesting and that harvesting leads to increased carbon emissions in the short term.
The contribution of forests in climate change mitigation is presently very much at focus. As part of this debate, it is often stated that a carbon debt occurs when harvesting and that harvesting leads to increased carbon emissions in the short term.
In a new report, “The forest carbon debt illusion”, Dr. Peter Holmgren has analyzed carbon flows for different levels of forest management in Sweden and how these scenarios impact the atmosphere. Dr. Holmgren used to head up the work on climate change for FAO and is now advisor on sustainable development.
During the livestreamed broadcast Dr. Holmgren will present his conclusions and findings. Professor Gert-Jan Nabuurs from the Wageningen University in the Netherlands will comment on the report. EU policy input will be provided by Mrs. Anna Holmberg and Mrs. Emma Berglund from the Swedish Forest Industries.

|20.05.2021||web||EFI: Role of Science in Supporting Policymaking (Webinar, 20 May 2021)|
Politicians, media and the public are increasingly demanding evidence-based information to inform policymaking on complex issues such as climate change and biodiversity. However, there is an increasing amount of science information available. Clearly, the decision-maker needs scientists and science-based intermediary organizations that can critically evaluate and synthesize scientific information in a format that is easily accessible while not simplistic. Yet, what is sometimes puzzling for the decision-makers and general public, is that scientists do not necessarily agree on their messages. Sometimes exactly the opposite implications are drawn, for example, on forest-related issues.

Sustainable forest bioenergy - Important building block to reach European Green Deal objectives?
A climate-neutral EU by 2050 is at the heart of the European Green Deal (EGD). An important milestone will be a revised and more ambitious 2030 EU climate target, which in turn will require the European Commission to present revisions of all relevant climate and energy legislations, including the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
Forest-based bioenergy - consisting primarily of wastes and residues from forestry and forest industry, such as tops and branches, sawdust, and bark - are the main sources of EU bioenergy.
Important aspects to address are for instance:
How do we approach and assess different types of forest bioenergy sources?
What is the role for forest-based bioenergy in reaching multiple European Green Deal objectives?
To what extent will the existing criteria assure sustainable forest-based bioenergy in the future?
How can we assure predictability and transparency for investors?
The event is hosted by Pär Holmgren, Member of European Parliament (Greens), member of the ENVI Committee and substitute in the TRAN and AGRI Committees
Most welcome to register,
Anna Holmberg, Swedish Forest Industries

|20.10.2020||web||Timber buildings: reuse and recycling for sustainability |
This webinar explores the topic of the circular economy for wood used for construction. Wood, as a natural and renewable material has huge advantages for sustainability. But ensuring that wood comes from responsibly managed forests is only part of the picture. Renewable is not the same as infinite and with rising global demand for wood, it is becoming increasingly necessary to think beyond its first use. As well as caring where the wood came from, we need to care about where it goes next.

The European Timber Trade Federation (ETTF) and the European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry (EOS) announce that the 68th International Softwood Conference, originally planned in Helsinki from 6 to 9 October 2020, will now take place digitally in a compact form on 8 October 2020. "The expanding COVID?19 outbreak, experienced in the last months in Europe, as in the rest of the globe, made us feel we should take responsibility and opt for a new ISC format,” said Silvia Melegari, Secretary General of EOS. The Finnish Sawmill Association will be glad to host a physical International Softwood Conference in 2021. The COVID?19 pandemic has disrupted trade and affected supply chains. It is not clear whether these actions are temporary, or if they will have a lasting impact. On occasion of the digital ISC 2020 Conference, high level speakers will offer the unique opportunity to discuss about how the post COVID ?19 timber market will look like.
The digital ISC conference will be held on 8 October and it will comprise a maximum of 4 hours, in which worldwide market reports and mainly forecasts will be presented. It is also planned to offer a report on the banking sector and the European construction industry. The digital ISC 2020 will be moderated by the timber market expert, Keith Fryer.
"We see this digital ISC as an excellent opportunity to hold this important event even in the pandemic year and to report on the global softwood lumber markets. A complete cancellation of the event would therefore have been out of the question for us", says Thomas Goebel, Secretary General of ETTF.
As every year, information about the registration for the digital conference 2020 will be available on the specially designed website as of summer this year.

|15.07.2020||web||Webinar of 15 July 2020 on "Fostering sustainable wood use in the building sector for greener cities: Lessons-learned from wood encouragement policies"|
Joint Webinar of FAO’s Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest-based Industries (ACSFI)
and the Forest Technical Network (FTN)
For building back better after Covid19 pandemic, wood solutions offer a green construction material. It is renewable, recyclable and can be sustainably sourced. It has a low fossil carbon footprint and benefits from better environmental footprints in life cycle assessments than other conventional materials.
Wood encouragement policies (WEP) are implemented around the world at national, regional and local levels to i) promote the use of wood as a building material; ii) support local forest industries; iii) encourage sustainable economic development and iv) contribute to climate change mitigation. Through substitution effects and carbon storage, wood use in construction can contribute to meet the challenge of reducing fossil carbon footprint from the construction sector by proposing lower-energy consumption solutions.
Despite numerous opportunities, a number of challenges seem to stand in the way of using wood at larger-scale as construction material. Through different viewpoints, this webinar will present examples and lessons-learned from various WEP and stakeholders, including wood sector companies, architects and the public sector. Guiding questions being addressed during the webinar include:
•How can adequate WEP successfully tackle both the new economic crisis and the transition towards a sustainable wood-based bioeconomy that contributes to achieving SDGs in both, developed and developing countries?
•How can FAO and other development partners support the use of sustainably sourced wood as green building material?

|12. - 13.01.2017||Berlin (Germany)||International congress of the sawmill and wood industry|
Buliding with wood is at present under the attention of the public opinion: it has been put under the spotlight not only by the housing demand issue, which is currently very relevant, but also by the efforts of the German government to avert climate change. Recent developments have been opening new sales markets for the wood industries – however, this fact also calls for technical innovation, new products and comprehensive service provisions. For example, which solutions has the sector devised to address the shortage of housing demands in very populated cities? How has the sector managed to overcome legislative and organizational obstacles in, inter alia, multifamily houses and business buildings?
These and other topics will be discussed by participants in the international congress of the sawmill and wood industry, which will take place on the 12th and the 13th of January 2017 in Berlin.
Overview of the main conference topics:
- Building in cities and housing demand: the potential for wood
- Technology, products, and service provisions to build with wood. What to do to open up new markets
- Packaging market: the unknown giant in transition
- Bio-economy – chances and risks: use of sawmill by-products
- Focus on technology: Fire protection in the construction and machine technology
